Why Choose Essentially Dance?
Where Every Dancer is Seen
As a small school, we intentionally cap our classes at 20 students to ensure every dancer receives meaningful individual attention. This allows us to closely monitor technique, strength development, and progression while maintaining high standards in a focused and supportive environment.
Equally important, we foster a culture of fairness and respect — no dancer is favoured in class or at performance time. Opportuniuties for contribution in class, and class and stage positioning are shared, so that every student has their moment to be recognised. Each and every dancer is valued, supported, and challenged to reach their potential.
Performance & Examination Opportunities
Our dancers are offered meaningful opportunities to grow and shine. Students may choose to perform solo, duo and trio works in varying styles at competitions throughout the year, and those who wish can undertake internationally recognised Vaganova examinations, and Glen Wood Tap examinations. These experiences build confidence, resilience and artistry — while always being guided by readiness and individual goals.
Safety Is Non-Negotiable
Dancer safety isn’t an afterthought here — it’s a priority. All ballet students complete a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment before progressing en pointe. Dancers are only permitted to begin pointe work once clear strength and alignment criteria are met, and if they’re not quite ready, they’re supported with targeted training and reassessed the following year. For students in any dance style Junior level upward, we offer a dedicated strength and conditioning program designed to develop the muscular support, control and injury-prevention strategies essential for sustainable training.
We're Developing Leaders
We are proud to offer something really special — a formal, structured Student Teacher & Leadership pathway. Rather than simply allowing older students to “help out” in classes, we provide access to a progressive and intentional training program designed to develop confident, capable young leaders from just ten years of age. The Dancestep program provides real leadership training, developing confidence, communication skills, teamwork, and emotional intelligence, empowering students to become positive role models within our community, while gaining valuable employability skills that extend far beyond the studio. See www.dancestep.com.au for more details.
A Positive, Modern Culture
Dance culture in Australia is moving away from outdated ideals and body shaming — and we are passionate about creating a genuinely safe environment for your child. Our teachers make no comments about students’ appearance or bodies beyond ensuring compliance with our uniform policy. Instead, we focus on cultivating strong, healthy dancers who are capable of sustaining several classes per week with proper technique, strength and care.
Psychological Wellbeing
We are committed to a modern, child-centred approach to dance training that recognises the vital connection between psychological wellbeing and high performance. Our school aligns with contemporary safeguarding standards and current understanding of child development, ensuring every dancer trains in an environment that is structured, respectful, and emotionally safe. We maintain clear expectations, strong discipline, and rigorous technical standards, while delivering feedback in a calm and constructive way. We believe excellence is created through clarity, consistency, encouragement, and trust. By prioritising both mental wellbeing and technical precision, we develop not only strong dancers, but confident, capable young people.
